The Community Knitters & Crocheters group currently meets at Skein Lane
Studio to knit and crochet helmet liners for our troops every first and third Sunday from 1-3
p.m. The project leader for Skein Lane is Jane Cavalli, a long-time friend of the shop, and community project leader. We hope you will join us in this effort
This project was initiated because our deployed troops endure some some very cold conditions in many parts of the world. Wool helmet liners are also breathable and can wick away moisture, as well as keep out the desert sand.
The helmet liners that we knit and crochet will be collected and sent to
the national coordinator in Illinois. You may aslo send them directly to the address listed in the Press Release. Please note that on the information page, there is an additional pattern (to sew) for neck coolers, which you may wish to make as well. All of these handmade items can bring some comfort to our troops deployed abroad and are very appreciated.
Patterns for the helmet liners are available via the links below.
Liners should be made of a soft 100% wool yarn that is medium weight (US 7-8 needles/size K hook). The colors should be appropriate to the military: tan, brown, gray,
olive or black. See the list below for some suggested yarns in stock at Skein Lane.
Anyone interested in
helping out is welcome to join the group at any time. If you are unable to stitch with the group, you are welcome to donate your knit or crochet helmet liners at Skein Lane. Jane, our project leader, will get them shipped to the national coordinator. Your time, stitches
and thoughtfulness are appreciated. Should you have any questions, please call the shop at 510.525.YARN (9276) or email us.
